Lets Stretch it all out and get relief and increase flexibility - Starting Saturday July 5th!

We’re so excited to introduce our new class in July.  Stretch30 will be commencing on Saturdays from 9am – 9.30am.

Our current program has stretch elements choreographed throughout the set, but sometimes you may feel like you need that little bit more of a stretch post workout. So here’s your answer!  Stretch30!!

So what is a Stretch30 class?  What does it involve and what are the benefits?

Our Stretch30 class will commence with a choreographed opening isolation and ender with some freestyle stretching in between.

So what are the benefits to a good stretch? According to the Mayo Clinic, the top five benefits of stretching include:
  • Increased flexibility and joint range of motion: Flexible muscles can improve your daily performance. Flexibility tends to diminish as you get older or if you have remained inactive over a period of time, but you can regain and maintain it.
  • Improved circulation: Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles. Blood flowing to your muscles brings nourishment and gets rid of waste byproducts in the muscle tissue. Improved circulation can help shorten your recovery time if you've had any muscle injuries.
  • Better posture: Frequent stretching can help keep your muscles from getting tight, allowing you to maintain proper posture as well as tone and tighten your entire body. Good posture can minimise discomfort and keep aches and pains at a minimum.
  • Stress relief:  Stretching relaxes tight, tense muscles that often accompany stress.
  • Enhanced coordination: Maintaining the full range-of-motion through your joints keeps you in better balance. Coordination and balance will help keep you mobile and less prone to injuries.

And lastly, here are some technique tips that will allow you to enjoy your Stretch30 and avoid any unnecessary injury:

  • Warm up first:  Stretching muscles when they're cold increases your risk of pulled muscles. We’ll do this with our regular Opening Isolation routine.
  • Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds It takes time to lengthen tissues safely. Hold your stretches for between 15-30 seconds and make sure you are executing the stretch correctly by watching your Instructor closely
  • Don't bounce: We love to bounce, but NOT this time! Bouncing as you stretch can cause small tears in the muscle, which leave scar tissue as the muscle heals. The scar tissue tightens the muscle even further, making you even less flexible — and more prone to pain.
  • Focus on a pain-free stretch: If you feel pain as you stretch, you've gone too far. Back off to the point where you don't feel any pain, then hold the stretch.
  • Relax and breathe freely: Don't hold your breath while you're stretching
  • Stretch both sides: Make sure your joint range of motion is as equal as possible on each side of your body
We look forward to you joining us for our Stretch30 classes.  We would also welcome your feedback on how it has benefited you and what you would like to see in any of our classes in the future!

OK, I'll just take a selfie....

We've had a ball this month at Jazzercise South West Sydney.  Our customers are really getting into the spirit of our attendance game and are "checking in" via Facebook to every class they are attending.  This week we even added an extra criteria where you had to add a selfie to your check in. And we have had some very creative entries! We look forward to announcing our winners shortly.
So, there are more benefits to this competition besides prizes.  The more times you come to class per week, the more benefits you receive from working out, including (but not limited to!):
·         At least a 65% decreased risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and stroke
·         A decreased risk of diabetes and osteoporosis
·         Improved movement of joints and muscles and oxygen delivery throughout the body
·         Body fat reduction and increase of lean muscle
·         Improved sense of strength, endurance and overall wellbeing

The above list of benefits may not be immediately tangible, but they will definitely pay off over time. The benefits will last more than any competition we every have (though we of course will still have these!)
There's just a couple of days to go now to enter the Check in competition.  So, come to class and show your check in and you automatically go into the running.  Come and receive all your benefits in a 60 minute class.  Oh, yeah...and take a selfie.

Fresh and Fun Classes coming your way

We are excited.  SO EXCITED.

Earlier this month the JSWS team attended the Instructor meeting and it was announced that we will be introducing  some fresh and exciting new formats to our existing classes.

Are you ready for it?
We know you are!  And they're coming your way real soon.

Fusion: A circuit type cross-fitness kind of workout that fuses cardio pumping dance with muscle mania.  The best of both worlds!

Strength45 and Strength60:  What you know as Body Sculpting is now Strength45 - the same muscle toning workout to sculpt those curves.  Strength60 is a full hour of fat-burning, muscle-building balance work.  In both classes we can guarantee lots of burn!

Core:  Cardio with a crunching core focus and the class ends with mega muscles.

STRIKE: This class hits cardio and muscles hard.  Jab and kick your way through cardio and end with a muscle blast.

We are thrilled to introduce these to your regular class times in April.  One thing we can guarantee, no matter what class you attend, YOU WILL HAVE FUN and YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Look out for the April class schedule on our website, Facebook and Twitter.

But you're not supposed to have Favourites?

As Instructors, we're not supposed to have "favourites" - but we have to admit that we do.
They arrive every 10 weeks and are fresh, new and have an abundance of variety..and the best thing is that we get to share them with our amazing customers.  They are our Jazzercise routines.

The last set that we have been sharing with our customers included so many genres - country, rock, pop, techno, blues and jazz and each one of the Instructors had their favourites:

Megan, our Class Owner and fabulicious Instructor just LOVED the routine Work Work by Britney Spears.  It's one of those routines that everyone can sing to and all the words are applicable to us Jazzercisers.   Not only does it have a great beat, in pumps up the class, has a positive vibe and ticks all the workout boxes by releasing all those fantastic endorphins!

Jarrod, our resident male Instructor is currently teaching "Celebrate" by Tribal Saints and with its lunges, skips and chasse's, it definitely pumps the heart and gets the whole class pumping with its high impact and intensity.

Julie is a HUGE fan of the 80's and 90's and the reprise of George Michael's hit "Faith" by Lake Street Dive with a more jazzy feel was definitely down Julie's alley.  This routine was also unique with all the major muscle groups used - the back, shoulders, hips, hamstrings and quads - just to name a few.  She just loved seeing our customers sing along to this routine and forget all about how hard they were working along the way!

Tracey loves a good heart-kicker and it's not surprising that Tracey's favourite this set was "Fast Run".  This routine was used by all our Instructors as it was a mixture of high impact moves including skips, jumps and chasses and low impact moves with massive circular fist pumps and those unique jazz hands!  Tracey loved the high evergy of this routine and when you think the song is about to finish, it picks up for another round.  This is exactly what all our Instructors love - to keep our customer guessing...

Wendy is our pocket rocket and boy, does she know how to get some air under those feet.  Although Wendy loves a good heavy routine, her favourite in this set was "Night and Day".  This song by Hot Chip  was a great mix of upper torso work for the triceps and deltoids and also worked those lovely legs of ours.  This was definitely one of those routines that your muscles felt for a few days after.

Michelle has just opened up new classes at North Brisbane and one of her current favourites is "Wake me up" by Aviici.  This routine was a fantastic mix of core rotations and layouts - what Michelle calls "Abdominal Heaven"!

We know that our customers have favourites too.  We looked at all the responses from Jazzercise fans and you can see it for yourself - https://www.facebook.com/Favourite Routine!

Come along to class to let us know what your favourite is - we'd love to incorporate your favourite into our set (that's if we haven't already!)

More information on our unique program can be found at www.jazzercisesouthwest.com.au or check out Twitter or our Facebook page.  Come to class and find out how you can incorporate an entire body workout into just 60 minutes.

The Fight for Breast Cancer

Our resident instructor, Michelle Chandra, is taking on a great project - to raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Network Australia. Michelle will be running the Sydney Morning Herald half marathon on Sunday 19th May, 2013 and she will be raising funds during her more than 20km run through the streets of Sydney!

We are supporting Michelle in her training through, of course - plenty of Jazzercise classes, and being able to financially donate to her efforts.

The link to donate to Michelle's run is:

http://www.everydayhero.com.au/michelle_chandra

We hope that you might too be able to help support Michelle with this great cause by donating as well - any amount small or large is much appreciated.

So what can we do about cancer awareness and prevention?

The good news is that more women than ever before are surviving a diagnosis of breast cancer thanks to early detection and more effective, safe and tailored treatments. Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease. Take the time to get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts while showering, dressing or looking in the mirror (this includes you too guys!). It’s never too early to start being breast aware and it’s important to keep up the habit, even if you are having regular mammograms.

Check out this easy guide to self breast assessments, happy self assessing and remember that make sure you see your Dr if required.
